Cough Syrups and Cough Drops Do Affect Your Teeth

Cough Syrup and Cough Drops

Coughs, colds and flu’s are usually indicators that the cold weather is starting to buckle in.  As we all know, having a cold or flu has a tendency to make our every day lives feel miserable. As the symptoms begin to manifest, most people tend to reach for an over-the-counter medicine to try an ease the symptoms.  Cough drops and cough medicines are usually the first “go to” relievers.

It is important to remember how some of the products that are meant to make us feel better can do serious harm to our teeth. Cough drops and cough syrups, even though they are sold in the medicine aisle, contain some of the highest sugar concentrations out there.  Ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup and sucrose provide high concentrations of sugar on your teeth. Sugars break down to acids and ultimately attack the enamel on your teeth.

Many relievers also contain citric acid and antihistamine’s.  Citric acid can wear down the enamel of your teeth.Antihistamine’s contain low pH levels and high acidity which will also contribute to tooth decay.

Finally, some cough and cold syrups contain alcohol.  Alcohol can have a drying effect on the mouth.  Your saliva naturally rinses the sugars from your mouth. With less saliva, sugars remain in your mouth leading to more risk of tooth decay.

How Can You Help Your Teeth?

1. Drink Lot’s of Water.  Water helps rinse the sugars off your teeth.  Plus staying hydrated will help with your cold.

2. Brush your teeth after taking any medicine

3.  Try to take your medicine at meal times

What do you mean it’s not a cavity? My Tooth Hurts? …

 tooth PainWhat Causes Tooth Pain?

Many believe that your eyes are the windows to your soul.  But in the dental world, it is believed that your mouth is the window to the health of your body.

The most common reason someone books an appointment at the dentist is due to a tooth ache. Tooth decay is the most prevalent reason for tooth pain.  Cavities are most painful when the decay penetrates through the enamel and affects the inner layer of the tooth. This causes the tooth to become sensitive and if left untreated can become worse.

Tooth decay is not the only culprit that can emanate tooth pain. Advanced gum disease can cause a toothache even when the tooth is healthy.  Advanced gum disease causes a dull pain around the teeth from gums swelling and bone loss.  Gum abscess may also occur with advanced stages of periodontists.

Tooth grinding is a very common reason people feel tooth pain.  From constant grinding of your teeth, you can wear down or chip your teeth.  This action tends to put excess force on the gum tissue which can cause tooth pain and also your jaw to hurt.

What is not as commonly known, a crooked tooth can cause you tooth pain.  When your teeth are not aligned properly, it puts undistributed force on your teeth and nerves.  This misalignment can be the catalyst for a number of other issues including headaches.

And finally, with allergy season coming upon us, another reason a tooth or teeth might hurt is due to a sinus infection.  A sinus infection can cause a dull ache to your upper back teeth.  Because the sinuses are close to the upper jaw, a sinus infection, do to the swelling of the sinus, can make you feel as if pain is coming from your teeth.

Red Heads Need Special care at the Dentist

red heads

Being a red head might be more special than you think!  In the past five years, researchers have found a genetic mutation responsible for those cherry silky locks and angel white skin. Their coloring is special and is the result of a mutation in the MC1R gene which creates the red hair and the very light complexion to exist.

Red heads make up only 2% of the entire human race.  Even though they have an uncommon presence in the population, it has been found that they have some unique special human abilities that set them apart from the rest of us.

As more research is concluded, gingers (as they are lovingly referred to) are proving to be the real life X-Men of our species. They possess special abilities that set them apart and make them unique among the many inhabitants of the world.

What Make’s “Gingers” Special?

  • A redhead’s snowy white skin, while subject to sunburn, is a sponge for absorbing vitamin D. Scientists believe that this gives them the ability to fight off certain debilitating and potentially deadly illnesses more effectively then blonde’s or brunette’s.  Also, they are known for having strong bones.
  • Redheads are more sensitive to hot and cold.
  • Redheads will never turn grey.  Rather with age, their hair will become a blonde color.
  • Those with the MC1R mutation are more sensitive to opiate pain killers — which means they’d actually need less — but less sensitive to other types, most notably lidocaine injections. A 2004, research showed that people with red hair needed 20 percent more general anesthesia than blondes and brunettes.
  • Redheads are usually more fearful of the dentist than brunette’s and blonde’s.  Probably because they are resistant to local pain blockers like Novocaine.
  • And finally, pheromones.  It has been noted that red heads produce a unique pheromone scent that is very appealing to the opposite sex.  More studies need to be done to verify this conclusion.

Learning To Eat With Dentures

learning to eat with dentures

Learning To Eat With Dentures

Making the decision to wear dentures is an important step.  Being unable to enjoy foods you once enjoyed due to tooth loss is a horrible problem to have. Not only does it affect your quality of life but your nutritional health as well.  I can assure you, with time and properly fitting dentures, you can resume eating the majority of the foods you once loved. Keep in mind, new dentures will improve your quality of life but it does come with an adjustment period.

I wish I could tell once you get your new pearly whites that you can now go out and enjoy a nice steak dinner.  Actually, that is furthest from from the truth.  Just like learning to do anything new, dentures require an adjustment period for your mouth to get use to the dentures being there.  It takes time and practice for your mouth to adjust to holding the dentures in place.  Keep in mind, this adjustment is only temporary and should last about 2 months.

When at first using your new dentures, you might find it initially difficult laughing, talking, eating and coughing. But in short time, your mouth will adjust to these differences and automatically compensate without thought. You may also experience some minor gum soreness for the first couple months until your gums get use to the contact from the dentures.

Suggestions for New Dentures:

  • Try a denture adhesive to keep dentures in place. This can be helpful with new dentures
  •  Eat slowly and eat small bites
  •  Don’t bite down with front teeth
  •  Practice Speaking- you might have difficulty for these first few days
  •  Start by eating soft foods and liquids . Breads, yogurt, eggs.  You can increase your exposure to harder foods over time.  Don’t worry, you will get there!

If you experience problems with your dentures, you should always contact your dentist. The office of J.C. Duncan puts our patients first!  We are here to ensure your dental experience is always a pleasant one.

Cavities Can Be Contagious!

kissing- cavities The next time you are on a date, you might want to think twice before puckering up for that goodnight smooch.  At least not until you can get a full dental history on your new suitor.  With so many things to worry about to keep yourself healthy, is it even possible we need to think twice about that first passionate kiss in fear of catching a cavity?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Just like colds and flu’s, studies have shown that cavities and gum disease are contagious and can be transmitted through saliva. With that being said; if your partner has gum disease or untreated cavities, a passionate kiss can exchange those damaging bacteria from their mouth to yours.  Those same bacteria will then attack your teeth.

There is a Silver Lining. To reduce the risk, it is recommended that an emphasis on good oral hygiene be practiced.  Frequent flossing and brushing is necessary to rid your mouth of harmful bacteria.  Drinking lots of water and chewing sugar-free gum is also helpful as it promotes saliva and washes away plaque and bacteria.

As for your partner, a trip to the dentist is warranted to get their mouth healthy again.  It is also important to emphasis maintaining good oral hygiene practices. Make sure you convey to them that their neglected dental care can affect their overall health.  Your dental health is directly related to your overall health.  A healthy mouth can work in your favor to an overall healthy you.
